Teen Chat Comment from Erin

Hey guys. I actually need your opinion. I'm 18 years old and was recently diagnosed with ADHD. While the medication is helping with my attention span and all that, many of my problems don't seem to fall under ADHD. I hate eye contact, have meltdowns when things deviate from a set plan, really really struggle socially and avoid social situations when I can, and I even have random habits when i'm nervous, bored, or upset like rocking and pacing. My problem comes in that the only reason we found out I was ADHD was because of problems with my grades in school, not because my parents took me to see if I was. My cousin has Asperger's and while he is more severe than I might possibly be, I see a lot of me in him. Every self test I have taken say it is very possible that I am very high function but on the Asperger's spectrum none the less. All my parents see is that I have a few friends, go to youth group often, and have never seemed to have any delays in school other than not turning things in and my recent problems with my harder classes and they keep comparing me to others and I can't get them to stop and look at me only and the symptoms. I don't know how to approach them to make them listen to me to try to talk to my behavioral therapist to see if I might have Asperger's. Any suggestions? I would really appreciate any ideas you guys have.

  1. I think the key is that you are now 18. If I was you I would go to a school counclor and talk to them because you are the one that has to live with it weather you get someone to put a label on i or not. If they wont help you then you could just work on some exercises to improve your social skills and alleviate symptome because there is no medication to fix this anyways. Sorry your parents wont listen to you.

  2. Thank you so much for your input. I already have a behavioral therapist for my ADHD so i was thinking of just talking to her when i go next week. I understand that there is no medication, but even if it is just getting someone to stop and actually listen it would mean the world to me just because it might mean there are other kids and teens out there like me and someone who is listening to what i feel, so i wouldn't be as alone as i feel now. My parents and I are very close and i'm hoping they come around within the next week or so. :)

  3. I guess I would think of the situations that stand out the most in your mind because of discomfort and sit down with your parents and tell them how you felt and why you think you felt those ways. You could possibly go online or to the public library to research the distinguishing characteristics of Asperger's and ADHD. If you want to discuss certain difficulties you're having in your life you could always google 'Asperger's OASIS' and check out the forums on there and see if others are going through similar ordeals and think similarly to you.

  4. Thank you guys so much. When I went to my behavioral therapist last week, I discussed some of the problems I was having, and after many questions for both myself and my parents, I was officially diagnosed with mild Asperger's. It's awesome to have my parents now really trying to understand how I see things and also to know there are kids out there who struggle with the same thing I do.

    1. Hey Erin,
I also have mild high functioning Aspergers I have many of the problems that you are currently having, I went to my GP who sent me to a chemist to see the natural section. They perscribed me several natural remedies (herbal) that while they cant "fix" the problem, can make it easier to deal with. Mainly they are anti anxiety and a focuser as well as a certain vitamin (one of the B... somethings). I'm 19 and studying at university so going through much the same as you. It would be good to talk to you.

  6. Hey Guys. So it's been a while since I posted this, but my life has been pretty crazy. Stacky_93, I am now on Vyvanse for my ADHD and Fluoxetine for my anxiety. While it don't help me to magically understand body language, tone of voice, and other basic social cues, it makes it easier to handle when things go wrong. I am also going Gluten and Casin Free soon as I tried it before and it seems to help me as well so i'm going to give it another shot. I would love to talk to any of y'll. Just message me back or I am sometimes on the Chat. My screen name is LHSACE19. :)

I still struggle some days of course, but I am empowered to continue on because I know that my story might be able to help others out there!! I have set up an email for people wishing to contact me about Asperger's or my blog! You can reach me at asperdays@gmail.com :) :)
