Teen Chat Comment from Brittany

Aspies_Teen_Chat_comments = Hi! My name is Brittany, I am 19years old. I am not in the spectrum but my 17year old sister is and is high functioning. I wanted to know if it was okay to ask you guys a question about her since you all have real life experience dealing with some of the thing she does.
She is constantly tired, ALL THE TIME and all she talks about is food all day long. She complains of her body aching and feels heavy a lot. I think it may be related to depression but my parent puts it off as other things. I feel like she constantly pretends to be happy but I can tell she isn't really. Can you help me figure this out? I don't know how to help her. I really want her to excel in her life but it seems things are going backwards. Thank you in advance!

  1. Hi Brittany. Definitely not an expert, but I may be of help since I am high functioning too on the spectrum. My email is ashzig00@gmail.com. Feel free to email with your question. I will hopefully be able to answer.

  2. Hi, Brittany. My name is Zoe. I am also on the high-functioning end of the spectrum. From what you shared, It sounds like your sister may have depression. Depression is common in people with autism-- especially girls.

People with autism have difficulty expressing their feelings and also understanding their feelings. She most likely will not come to you and tell you how she is feeling. It would probably be best if you confront her about it. Rather than waiting for her to tell you.
When confronting her about it, make sure you are subtle. You can be subtle by maybe watching a show about depression with her. then from there you can spike up a conversation about depression with her.
It is important that you confront her about it before it escalates into something else(self-harming, suicidal ideation..etc.)

If you have any questions, feel free to email me at zfagan2015@gmail.com
